Description:
(1898-1995) Maine Congresswoman 1940-49 & Senator 1949-73. A moderate Republican, she is perhaps best remembered for her 1950 speech, "Declaration of Conscience," in which she criticized the tactics of McCarthyism. On Jan. 27, 1964, she announced her candidacy for President of the United States. She lost every single primary election, but did manage to win 25% of the vote in Illinois. At the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco, she became the 1st woman to have her name be placed in nomination for the presidency at a major political party's convention. She placed 5th in the initial balloting, and denied unanimous consent for Goldwater after refusing to withdraw her name from the final ballot. A likely reference to her 1964 campaign for the GOP presidential nomination. Photo is inscribed in white ink to celebrated collector Rev. Cornelius Greenway and signed as US Senator. Cornelius Greenway (1896-1968) immigrated to the US from Holland in 1914. Served with US Army in France in WW I, received Purple Heart and Service Medal. Tufts Univ. BA 1925, STB 1928. Started collecting autographs, inc. photographs, in late 20’s. Ordained Universalist minister 1926, served parishes in Taunton & Boston, Mass. Pastor of All Souls Church in Brooklyn, New York 1929-65, affiliated with National Assn. of Congregational Christian Churches 1961.
