Romney, George

Business executive, Michigan Governor, Nixon Cabinet member

Price: $25.00

Description:
(1907-1995) Chairman and President of American Motors Corp. 1954-62, 43rd Governor of Michigan 1963-69, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development 1969-73. Father of 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Born to American parents living in Mormon colonies in Mexico, he later presided over the Detroit Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a strong supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and briefly represented moderates against conservative Republican Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential election. He was an ineffective campaigner for the 1968 GOP nomination, and, after a mid-1967 remark that his earlier support for the Vietnam War was due to "brainwashing" by military and diplomatic officials in Vietnam, he withdrew from the race. As Nixon’s HUD Secretary, his plans for housing production increases for the poor, and for open housing to desegregate suburbs, were often thwarted by Nixon. SP, 5 x 3 ½ seated b&w flat finish bust portrait, possibly during of after his Cabinet service.
