(1772-1851) 5th US Secretary of the Navy 1815-18 (Madison-Monroe). Son of Salem, Mass. sea captain and merchant, worked in family shipping business, served at sea, and active in politics. Elected to Mass. House of Representatives 1811 and state Senate 1812. Named Secretary of the Navy Jan. 1815, at end of War of 1812, managed transition to peacetime force, implemented new Board of Commissioners administrative system and built several ships of the line, backbone of much enhanced Navy. Also oversaw strategy and naval policy for 1815 war with Algiers. On leaving office returned to business and Massachusetts political affairs, serving 2 more terms in Massachusetts House, US Rep 1823-31. Great-great-grandfather of Charles Francis Adams III, Secretary of the Navy 1929-33. 10 x 7 ¾ ALS while Secretary, Washington, May 3 1815, to an unnamed judge, a friendly letter relating a settled legal matter and mentioning other personalities. He notes the President (Madison) “…is still absent, Mr. Dallas wishing our Ministers home, he is very efficient & does, I think, wonders.” Crowinshield has fulfiled part of the judge’s request and part may be fulfilled, and tells him to “be assured I will promote your wishes so often as I can” and asks to be remembered to “my political friends one & all & such others as wish me well.”
