(1820-1899) Iowa Free Soil & Republican US Senator 1855-65, 1867-73. Resigned 1865 to become Secretary of the Interior under President Andrew Johnson, an appointment he held until 1866. As secretary, fired numerous employees, inc. poet Walt Whitman. Resigned 1866 when he no longer supported President Johnson. One of two Iowans whose sculptured likeness is under the Rotunda in Statuary Hall in the US Capitol in Washington. Close friend of President Lincoln and his family, his daughter married Robert Todd Lincoln 1868. Signed 2 ¼ x 5 ¼ slip, adds “Iowa” under signature, most likely while US Senator. undated but ca. 1869.
