Price: $95.00

Description:
(B. 1934) Lebanese-American lawyer & consumer advocate. In 1963 he left private law practice in Hartford, Conn., to hitchhike to Washington, D.C., where he began public interest work. His concern about unsafe car designs resulted in the 1965 best-selling book “Unsafe at Any Speed” which led directly to the passage of national auto-safety standards. Since then he and his associates ("Nader's Raiders") have performed numerous studies on consumer health, safety, and financial issues and have lobbied for greater government regulation of business & industry in a variety of areas. Instrumental in passage of the 1966 Freedom of Information Act and in establishing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency. He founded the consumer organization Public Citizen and the US Public Interest Research Group, an umbrella organization for other public interest research groups. As the Green Party candidate in the 2000 US presidential election, won 3% of the national vote. He ran for president in 2000, 2004 & 2008. A common claim is that Nader was a “spoiler” in the 2000 presidential election, in which 537 votes gave George W. Bush a crucial and controversial victory in Florida. He received almost 100,000 votes in Florida, from which even a slight shift in favor of Gore would have altered the outcome. Others, including Nader, dispute this claim. In 2004, he received 463,655 votes, for 0.38% of of the popular vote, placing him in 3rd place overall; in 2008, Nader received 738,475 votes, for 0.56% of the popular vote, earning him another 3rd place position in the overall election results. 4pp 8 ˝ x 7 printed Bates College Chapel brochure with Autograph Quotation (“For active citizenship”) Signed (“R Nader”) on the front cover under an image of the Chapel.
