Description:
(1899-1987) Russian Jewish-born painter, draftsman, and printmaker, referred to as an American scene painter. He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in people in contemporary settings that included the streets, subways, salons and artists' studios of New York City. He also wrote several books on his life and art. He pursued his art education at the free schools of the Cooper Union where he met Chaim Gross, who was a lifelong friend. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design and, subsequently, at the Art Students League of New York. While there, he took up the gritty urban subjects of the Ashcan school. He became associated with the “Fourteenth Street School” of painters including Reginald Marsh, Isabel Bishop, and Peggy Bacon, and persistently investigated a several themes - female nudes, portraits of friends and family, New York and its people — in paintings, drawings, watercolors and prints. Beginning in the early 1930s he showed regularly in the annual & biennial American exhibitions of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He had a series of solo exhibitions in New York galleries and also worked in the WPA Federal Arts Project in the 1930s. His work is in numerous museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, The Phillips Collection and Corcoran Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C., The New York Public Library, Tel Aviv Museum, Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, and the Los Angeles County Museum. In 1953 Soyer co-founded the magazine Reality, and wrote and illustrated the following books: “A Painter's Pilgrimage: An Account of a Journey with Drawings by the Author” (1962); “Homage to Thomas Eakins, Etc.” (1966); “Raphael Soyer, Self-Revealment: a Memoir” (1969); and “Diary of an Artist” (1977). 10 ¼ x 8 ¼ b&w paper reproduction from a book of his works, bust self-portrait in older age in coat and tie, signed at lower right.
