Description:
(1858-1942) German tenor, son of a Berlin jeweler, studied singing in Berlin and debuted in 1881 at the Stadttheater in Gdansk (Danzig) as a lyric tenor. His voice changed about 1885 to the heroic tenor. From Danzig he sang at the Dusseldorf Opernhaus 1883-85, and at the Rotterdam Deutschen Theater 1885-87. He appeared at the Hannover Hoftheater 1888-95, at the Stadttheater in Hamburg 1895-98, and sang at the Berlin Hofoper 1898-1911. He appeared at the Bayreuth Festival 1891-97 as Parsifal, Tannhäuser, Siegfried and Walther von Stolzing in "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". His creation of the title role in Wagner’s "Rienzi" was considered in his time as an incomparable achievement. He appeared at the Berlin Hofoper in the premieres of the operas "Briseïs" by Chabrier (1899), "Cain" (1900) by d'Albert, "Samson et Dalila" (1901) by Saint-Saëns, "Der Pfeifertag" (1902) by von Schillings (after 1899 premiere at the Hoftheater in Schwerin). He appeared as Faust in Gounod’s "Faust" in a 1901 Berlin performance in which Geraldine Farrar debuted as Marguerite. In 1904 he performed at the Berlin Hofoper in the unsuccessful premiere of Leoncavallo's opera "Der Roland von Berlin". In 1899 he sang there also in the premiere of Lortzing’s opera "Regina", 48 years after the composer's death. He made guest appearances in London and Amsterdam and with the Damrosch Opera Company in the US 1895-96. He retired in 1911 and was active in Berlin as vocal pedagogue.
