Description:
(1850-1925) Renowned Polish tenor, brother of Edouard and Josephine, debuted as baritone 1874, returned to stage as tenor 1879. Sang in 1884 Paris premiere of Massenet’s Heriodiade, principal tenor of Paris Opera 1884-89, created leading role of Massenet’s Le Cid. Began Wagnerian roles in 1898 in Italian, famous as interpreter of Wagner in US after his Met debut 1891 in Lohengrin. He was considered the ideal Tristan (in German) to 1901. 5 x 4 ½ autograph sentiment signed in French translated as “I will always remember the welcome of the cordial and charming public of Philadelphia”, New York, February 15 1895.
