Description:
(1879-1972) American statesman. South Carolina US Senator (D) 1931-41 & Governor 1951-55 (in which capacity he vigorously criticized the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education). Associate Justice US Supreme Court 1941-42 (last Justice appointed to the Supreme Court who had been admitted to practice by reading law; he did not attend law school). Resigned from the Court to become 1st Director of the Office of Economic Stabilization 194243, also heading the Office of War Mobilization May 1943. As Secretary of State 1945-47 (Truman), he played a major role at the Potsdam Conference, the Paris Peace Conference, and other major postwar conferences. In time, he switched his party affiliation to Republican and endorsed Eisenhower in 1952, segregationist Harry Byrd in 1956, Richard Nixon in 1960 & 1968, and Barry Goldwater in 1964. Signed 3 x 4 engraved Supreme Court notecard, rare in this format!
