(b. 1923) Kansas GOP US Senator 1969-96. Gerald Ford's Vice Presidential running mate in 1976 election, Senate Majority Leader 1985-87 & 1995-96. GOP 1996 presidential nominee defeated by Bill Clinton. Severely wounded in combat in Italy in WW II, his right arm permanently paralyzed. Chairman of the Republican National Committee 1971-73. Dole ran for the 1980 GOP Presidential nomination, won by Ronald Reagan, made more serious bid but unsuccessful bid in 1988. He is the only person in the history of the 2 major parties to have been his party's nominee for both President & VP but never elected to either office. President Clinton awarded him a 1997 Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service in the military and his political career. ISP, 10 x 8 b&w flat finish bust portrait inscribed & signed with sentiment while US Senator, American flag by his right shoulder. Neat pencil identification & January 13 1977 receipt date by collector on verso. Leo (Sylvor, 1904-77) was a disabled WW II veteran, like Dole, who would send beautifully calligraphed namecards with his request for a signed photograph.
