HANNIBAL HAMLIN (1809-1891) Maine US Rep 1843-47, Senator 1849-57, resigned to become Governor Jan.-Feb. 1857, resigned. Elected to Senate as a Republican 1857-61, 1860 GOP VP. Elected VP, Hamlin loyally supported Lincoln, but, in 1864, leading Republicans suggested Lincoln replace him in the 1864 election for political reasons. As Lincoln needed votes of previous Democratic Party supporters in the North, Tennessee Governor Andrew Johnson was nominated to emphasize that Southern states were still part of the Union and to get support of the large War Democrat faction. Boston port collector 1865-66, again elected to the Senate serving 1869-81. Minister to Spain 1881-82. JAMES G. BLAINE (1830-1893) The Plumed Knight, Maine GOP Rep 1863-76, Speaker 1869-75, Senator 1876-81. GOP presidential hopeful 1876 & 1880, Secretary of State 1881 (Garfield). 1884 GOP presidential candidate, lost to Cleveland. Secretary of State 1889-92 (Harrison). 5 ¼ x 7 ½ autograph album page signed by Maine’s 1877-81 US Senators Hannibal Hamlin and James G. Blaine, both adding “Me.) under their signatures. Undated but ca. 1881. Both signatures can be separated, matted and framed.

Condition: Very good, small ink blot to left of Blaine’s signature
