ALVIN SAUNDERS (1817-1899) Governor of Nebraska Territory and US Senator. Delegate to 1846 Iowa State constitutional convention, Iowa state senator 1854-56 & 1858 -60. He was a commissioner appointed by Congress to organize the Union Pacific Railroad Co. Last Governor of Nebraska Territory 1861-67. Delegate to the 1868 Republican National Convention, elected to the US Senate, served 1877-83. Saunders County, Nebraska named after him. ALGERNON PADDOCK (1830-1897) Secretary of Nebraska Territory, US Senator after statehood. He left New York in 1857 and settled in Omaha, where he started a farm and law practice. Unsuccessfully ran for the Nebraska Territory House of Representatives in 1858. Helped edit the "Nebraska Republican" newspaper 1858-59. He attended an 1859 territorial convention, delegate to the 1860 Republican Convention, campaigned for Lincoln in Nebraska & New York. He was appointed by Lincoln in 1861 as Secretary of the Nebraska Territory which he held until Nebraska became a state in 1867; he was acting Governor in 1861. When Nebraska became a state, he ran for seats in both the US House and US Senate, but lost. President Johnson offered to appoint him Governor of Wyoming Territory, which he declined. He was elected to the US Senate 1875, chairman of the Agriculture Committee 1877-78, defeated for reelection in 1880. In 1882, he was part of a commission that set up elections in Utah Territory and used his position to try to discourage polygamy there. He served to 1886 when he was again elected to the Senate, serving 1887-93. 4 ˝ x 7 ˝ autograph album page signed by Nebraska’s ca. 1881 US Senators, Alvin Saunders & Algernon Paddock, both add “Nebraska” under signatures.
