Description:
(1834-1928) New York lawyer representing Cornelius Vanderbilt's railroad interests, president of the New York Central Railroad System, US Senator 1899-1911. Read law in Peekskill, NY, practiced law there until 1861. Later engaged in NYC brokerage business, resumed law practice in Peekskill, but soon returned to NYC. Appointed and confirmed as Minister to Japan 1865, declined appointment to pursue his railroad career. Became attorney for New York & Harlem Railroad 1866, took same position for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad 1869, named general counsel and director of entire "Vanderbilt System" in 1876. Became 2nd VP of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad (renamed New York Central Railroad 1914) 1882, president 1885-98, after presidency served as chairman of board of directors of New York Central Railroad Co. While active in the Vanderbilt roads in New York, held concurrent positions with many other railroads and companies. He was president of West Shore Railroad and served on boards of directors for the New York and Harlem Railroad, Chicago and North Western Railway, the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway, the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, Delaware and Hudson Railroad, New Jersey Junction Railroad, St. Lawrence and Adirondack Railroad, Walkill Valley Railroad, and the Canada Southern Railroad. He also served on the boards of Western Union, Hudson River Bridge Co., Niagara River Bridge Co., New York State Realty & Terminal Co., Union Trust Co., Equitable Life Assurance Co., and Kensico Cemetery Assn. He received 99 votes at the 1888 GOP presidential convention, made nomination speeches for Harrison in 1892, Levi Morton in 1896, and Charles Fairbanks in 1904. He declined appointment as Harrison's Secretary of State 1892. Village of Depew, NY (inc. 1894), once home to a New York Central Railroad factory, named after him. 6 x 4 Sarony Studio of New York length sepia cabinet photograph, identified at bottom, signed by Depew vertically at the left side.
