THOMAS F. BAYARD (1828-1898) “Peace Democrat”, widely credited for convincing the Delaware General Assembly to drop any thought of secession. US Senator 1869-85 (4th generation of his family to serve in the Senate). He was a member of the Electoral Commission that decided the 1876 Presidential election in favor of Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. A Democrat, he voted with the 7-member minority on all counts. Bayard sought the 1876 presidential nomination, ran 2nd to Winfield Scott Hancock for the 1880 Democratic nomination, and 2nd to Grover Cleveland in 1884. Secretary of State 1885-89 (Cleveland), negotiated the Fishery Treaty, settling fishing rights between the US and Canada in the North Atlantic. He paved the way for settlement of the Samoan question with Great Britain and Germany, and for upholding American interests in the Hawaiian Islands. He was the first US Ambassador to Great Britain 1893-97 (first to hold that title). ELI M. SAULSBURY (1817-1893) Delaware lawyer and Democratic politician, served in the state Assembly and as US Senator 1871-89.He was the middle brother of Governor Gove Saulsbury and US Senator Willard Saulsbury, Sr. Educated at Dickinson College, studied law, admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1857, began his practice in Dover. He served a term in the State House, 1853-54 session, and in 1870 successfully challenged his younger brother, Senator Willard Saulsbury, Sr. for his seat in the US Senate.
