Price: $15.00

Description:
THOMAS C. McCREERY (1816-1890) Kentucky US Senator 1868-71, 1873-79 (D). A presidential elector on the Democratic tickets in 1852, 1856, and 1860, he was elected as a Democrat to the Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Guthrie, and served Feb. 19, 1868-Mar. 3, 1871. McCreery was accused by then-Governor John W. Stevenson of helping hated former Union General Steven G. Burbridge obtain a position as revenue collector, and lost to Stevenson in the following election. McCreery was again elected to the Senate in 1872 and served from Mar. 4, 1873-Mar. 3, 1879, when he declined to be a candidate for reelection. JAMES B. BECK (1822-1890) Scottish-born Kentucky US Rep and Senator (D). He immigrated to the US in 1838, moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1843 and graduated from Transylvania University in 1846. Until shortly before the Civil War, he was law partner of John C. Breckinridge. After the war he was elected as a Democrat to Congress and served Mar. 4, 1867-Mar. 3, 1875. He was appointed to the Committee on Reconstruction where it was expected that as a newcomer and an immigrant he would be no obstacle to Republican intentions; he immediately became a tenacious advocate of the rights of the defeated states. In 1876, he was appointed a commissioner to define the Maryland-Virginia boundary line. He was elected to the US Senate in 1876, serving Mar. 4, 1877 to his death on May 3, 1890. Beck was Senate Democratic Conference Chairman 1885-90, and, as chairman of the Committee on Transportation Routes to the Seaboard, he was prominent in the discussion of tariff and currency issues. 4 ¾ x 7 autograph album page signed by Kentucky’s 2 ca. 1877-79 Democratic US Senators, McCreery adding “Ky” under his signature and Back adding “Lexington/Ky” under his signature.
