Description:
(1913-1991) Polish-born, founded Irgun to fight British during Mandate. 1st Likud PM of Israel 1975-1983. In 1978, Begin, aided by Foreign Minister Dayan and Defense Minister Weizman, negotiated Camp David Accords, and in 1979 signed the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty with Egypt’s President Sadat. Under the Treaty, brokered by President Carter, Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. The Treaty was a watershed moment in Middle-Eastern history, the first time an Arab state recognized Israel’s legitimacy. Israel accepted “land for peace” as the blueprint for resolving Arab-Israeli conflict. He received the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize with Sadat. In 1981 Begin ordered the bombing of Iraq's Tammuz nuclear reactor by Israel’s Air Force (Operation Opera) and enunciated the “Begin doctrine”: "On no account shall we permit an enemy to develop weapons of mass destruction against the people of Israel." Authorized invasion of Lebanon in response to the attempted assassination of Israel’s ambassador to the UK. Its stated objective was to force the PLO out of rocket range of Israel's northern border; its unpopular, unvictorious escalation led to his Aug. 1983 resignation and withdrawal from public life. Signed 4 x 6 yellow card with typed identification as Prime Minister of Israel and co-recipient of the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize; undated but 1978-83.
