(1852-1916) British chemist, professor at Bristol 1880-1887 & London 1887-1913 investigating molecular complexity of pure liquids, discovered noble gases argon (1894, with Rayleigh), neon, krypton, xenon (1898, with Travers), helium (1895) and radon (1910). Advanced proof that emanation of radium produces helium during its atomic disintegration (1903). Awarded 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, author. Brief AQS in Latin on 3 x 5 card: "'Scientia' longa, vita brevis" ("Science is long, life is short").
