Description:
(1858-1948) 2nd wife of 23rd US President Benjamin Harrison. She was 25 years younger than him, and the niece of his f1rst wife, Caroline Lavinia Scott Harrison. On Oct. 22, 1881, she married Walter E. Dimmick, who died Jan. 14, 1882, leaving her a widow at 23. She moved into the White House in 1889 to serve as assistant to the First Lady, her aunt. Sometime after Mrs. Harrison's death in 1892, former president Harrison and Mrs. Dimmick fell in love and late in 1895 announced their engagement. Mrs. Dimmick, aged 37, married the former president, aged 62, in 1896 in New York City. Harrison's grown children from his 1st marriage, horrified at the news, did not attend the wedding. Harrison's VP, Levi P. Morton, and several former Cabinet members were among the 3 dozen guests; former Navy Secretary Benjamin F. Tracy was best man. Frameable 2 ½ x 3 ½ card signed as “Mary Lord Harrison” adding year 1938.
