Description:
(1791-1852) 14th Secretary of the Navy, served July 24, 1843-February 18, 1844. A leader of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, elected to the state Senate in 1826, served as Collector of the Port of Boston from the late 1820s to 1838. In July 1843, President Tyler selected Henshaw as Navy Secretary in a recess appointment. During his brief term in office, he addressed shipbuilding problems, selected senior officers for important seagoing commands, revised supply arrangements in the Navy Yards and attempted to establish a school for Midshipmen. His appointment as Secretary failed to receive Congressional confirmation, requiring that he leave office when his successor (Thomas Gilmer) was confirmed. 1 ľ x 3 Ĺ clipped signature under printed ďNavy DepartmentĒ on portion of an address leaf, mounted to slightly larger piece.
