(1826-1902) USMA 1851, on Quartermaster duty at Indianola, Texas in 1861 when post was captured by Texan insurgents. Escaped, made his way East, participated at 1st Manassas as Asst. Adj. General in Hunter's Division. Brig General Vols. July 1863, brevet Major Genl USA, for "gallant and meritorious services in the field during the rebellion." Became Asst. Quartermaster General of the Army and Dept. of the Cumberland Nov. 1863 and in Dec. was appointed George H. Thomas' Chief of Staff. In that capacity, he took part in all operations at Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign, and movements arresting Hood's invasion of Tennessee at Franklin & Nashville. Continued with Thomas after the War, ADC to General-in-Chief of the Army Wm. T. Sherman 1870-75. Adjutant General of Div. of the Missouri, Div. of the Atlantic, and Dept. of the East 1878-90. 3 x 5 ¼ printed postwar DS, undated receipt for a copy of the “Atlas of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Battlefields”, 2nd edition, from the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission. Adds "Union Club, New York" below signature.
