(b. 1936) NASA astronaut, member of the 2nd manned Skylab space station crew in 1973. In 1982, he commanded STS-3, the 3rd space shuttle mission. He received a BS in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1959, and a MS in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1965. He became a Marine Corps officer in 1959 and received his aviator wings in 1960. Lousma was one of 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. He was a member of the astronaut support crews for the Apollo 9, 10, & 13 missions. He was CAPCOM recipient of the Apollo 13 "Houston, we've had a problem" message. He was the pilot for Skylab 3 (July 28-Sept. 25, 1973, with Alan Bean & Owen Garriott) and was commander on STS-3 (March 2230, 1982, 3rd orbital test flight of Space Shuttle Columbia, with pilot Gordon Fullerton), logging over 1,619 hours in space. He also spent 11 hours on 2 spacewalks outside the Skylab space station. He also served as backup docking module pilot of the US flight crew for the 1975Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission. Lousma left NASA and retired from the Marine Corps in 1983. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal (1973), the 1973 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the 1975 Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the 1975 AIAA Octave Chanute Award, inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1982, awarded a 2nd NASA Distinguished Service Medal (1982), the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal (1982), etc. In 1984, Lousma ran for the US Senate against Carl Levin but was hurt late in the campaign when video surfaced of him telling a group of Japanese auto manufacturers that his family owned a Toyota - this did not play well in the Detroit area. 10 x 8 color ISP, NASA lithograph bust portrait in civilian attire, inscribed with sentiment and signed. Captioned with his name on lower border. Collector noted date May 21 1970 (receipt) on verso.
