(1853-1902) To South Africa 1870 while a teen, made a fortune in the Kimberley diamond fields. He entered the Cape House of Assembly 1881. As Cape Colony Prime Minister 1890-96, he sought a Federal South African dominion under the British flag, advanced the Cape-to-Cairo railway, suppessed Matabeles, instigated the Jameson Raid to overthrow the South African Republic and was forced to resign. He brought about the annexation of Bechuanaland and, by cesssion from King of Matabeleland, land north of Bechuanaland which became Rhodesia. He was made sole manager of a company incorporated with sovereign rights over the territory. He consolidated diamond mines about Kimberley and formed DeBeers Consolidated Mines 1888. By his will, he endowed the Rhodes Scholarship program at Oxford for US, British and German students. Frameable 1 ¼ x 3 Close of an ALS (“yr C. J.
