(1886-1961) Commanded 8th Army in SW Pacific Area, among very first to engage the Japanese. USMA 09, Brigadier General Oct. 1940, USMA Superintendent 1940, left West Point for active duty in 1942. Named US I Corps Commanding General, to Australia 1942, promoted to Lieut. General. MacArthur gave him direct command of ineffective 32nd Infantry Division at Buna, major Japanese beachhead in NE New Guinea, set example by moving among troops on front lines, purposefully wore his 3 stars while at the front. Eichelberger led Australian-US Advanced New Guinea Force to victory early 1943. In 1944, had notable victories at Hollandia and Biak, in Dutch New Guinea. Commanded new 8th Army in invasion of Philippines, by July 1945, his forces defeated Japanese on Mindanao. In Aug. 1945, first US officer to land in Japan, 8th Army began 3-year Occupation stint; responsible for review of sentences passed to Class B or C war criminals at Yokohama. Retired Sept. 1948, wrote story of Army's ground war in the Pacific. Congress, in recognition of his service, promoted him to full General 1954. ISP, 5 x 4 portrait as Lieut. General at his desk, reading from papers into a microphone, identified by him on verso as "Taken on Leyte in Phil Islands/spring of 1945", inscribed and signed with sentiment, January 1948.
