(1935-2009) GOP politician, collegiate & professional football player. NY US Rep 1971-89, HUD Secretary 1989-93 (GHW Bush), contended for 1988 GOP presidential nomination. 1996 GOP VP candidate with Bob Dole. Professional quarterback for 13 years in the NFL & Canadian Football League, a star in the American Football League (AFL). Captain of both the San Diego Chargers & Buffalo Bills, AFL MVP 1965 after leading Buffalo to its 2nd consecutive championship. Played in the AFL for all 10 years of its existence, appeared in AFL All-Star game 7 times, played in 5 championship games, set many league career passing records. Co-founded AFL Players Assn., served 5 terms as president. An economic conservative, he advocated low taxes and supply-side policies in his political career. His positions ranged from conservative opposition to abortion to libertarian advocacy of immigration reform. Kemp considered a run for the Senate in 1980 and was a front runner for the VP nomination at the 1980 Republican Convention, receiving 43 votes from conservative detractors of George H. W. Bush. After reelection to his 6th term in 1980, his Republican peers elected him Chairman of the House Republican Conference, serving 7 years. He was a notable influence upon the Reagan agenda and architect of the 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act, the Kemp–Roth tax cut. Posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 by President Obama.
