Brimmer Jr., Martin

Signed 1860 carte-de-visite photo of the Harvard Fellow, 1st president of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts

Price: $50.00

Description:
(1829-1896) A founder and 1st president of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1870-96), entered Harvard at 16, graduated in the class of 1849. He obtained a law degree, never practiced, and was exempted from military service because of lameness. He served in the Massachusetts legislature 1859-61 and in the State Senate in 1864. A founding trustee of the Wadsworth Library, Geneseo, New York (his portrait hangs on the west wall), he served on the Library Board 1869-89. Brimmer was the son of Harriet Wadsworth Brimmer (eldest daughter of General James Wadsworth) and Martin Brimmer (1793-1847), Mayor of Boston 1843-44. The Memorial Transept at Harvard's Sanders Theatre contains the Brimmer Memorial Window, a stained glass window, one of 3 different stained glass works installed in the north transept window. The original work designed for this window was removed and replaced by Sarah Wyman Whitman's Martin Brimmer Memorial Window in 1898. In 1902 or 1903, the Whitman window was transposed with MacDonald's Virtues window presumably to allow more light for the Brimmer Memorial Window. SP "MBrimmer", 3/4-length 4 1/4 x 2 1/2 sepia CDV, adds "1860" on verso.

Condition: Very good, mount remnants verso
