(1894-1979) US Army Brig. General WW II. USMA 16, commissioned into Corps of Engineers. During WW I, received Distinguished Service Cross personally from General. Pershing for heroic action under fire as a battalion commander in Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Directed one of the great engineering feats of WW II, construction of the 1,519-mile ALCAN Highway in 9 months. He commanded the Provisional Engineer Special Brigade Group in assault on Omaha Beach at Normandy. Directed Combat Command B, 9th Armored Division, in the Ardennes and in its capture of the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine at Remagen. At War's end, commanded 4th Armored Division, and, during the Korean War, commanded IX Corps at Gen. Ridgway's request. Later commanded US Army, Europe. Major General May 1945, Lieut. General June 1951, General 1953. Retired 1955, became Chairman of Interlake Steel. War-dated 2 3/4 x 3 3/4 card signed as Brigadier General US Army, commanding 4th Armored Division, April 22 1945. Mounted at corners under newspaper portrait, both mounted onto light grey 11 1/4 x 8 1/2 3-holed sheet.
