(1889-1977) US Army Air Forces General, commanded Allied air forces in Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) Aug. 1942-1945. Joined Army Air Corps in WW I, promoted to Brigadier General 1941 in command of 4th Air Force. In Aug. 1942, Major General Kenney took command of Allied Air Forces in the South West Pacific Area and the newly-formed US 5th Air Force, becoming senior Allied air officer under General MacArthur. He led US, Australian, British, and Dutch air units in the air war in and around New Guinea, Dutch East Indies, Borneo, and the Philippines. One of the most successful air operations directed by Kenney was the destruction of a Japanese reinforcement fleet during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea in 1943 which ended Japanese hopes of retaining control of New Guinea. Lieutenant General 1944, appointed commander of US Far East Air Force, inc. 5th, 13th & 7th Air Forces. Units under his command took part in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Full General Mar. 9, 1945, in April 1946 named 1st commander of the Strategic Air Command. His performance there was criticized, and he became commander of the Air University from Oct. 1948 to his Sept. 1951 retirement from the Air Force. Frameable 2 x 3 1/2 card signed as General, US Army, dated May 8 1947 while leading the Strategic Air Command.
