(1891-1971) California Governor 1943-53, one of only 2 people to be elected Governor of California 3 times (the other being Jerry Brown). 1948 GOP VP candidate with Dewey. Chief Justice 1953-69, noted for opinions outlawing racial segregation in schools (Brown v. Board of Education, 1954), requiring state legislative reapportionment (Reynolds v. Sims, 1964), protecting rights of criminal suspects (Miranda v. Arizona, 1966), etc. Chaired Warren Commission investigating assassination of President Kennedy. TLS as Governor of California on his 10 x 7 letterhead with blue printed state seal at top left, Sacramento, March 6 1946, to G. Lynn Sumner, New York City. Warren thanks him for sending an autographed copy of Sumner's "splendid" book, "Meet Abraham Lincoln", which Warren calls "an inspiring story of a truly great American, and an excellent narrative of Lincoln's life." Warren is sure the book will arouse the interest of all who read it, praises the beautiful printing and binding, and calls it "a delightful addition to my library of American History" [sic]." G. LYNN SUMNER (1885-1952) New York advertising executive, president of the Advertising Club of New York 1939-41. He was famed for his expertise on the life and philosophy of Abraham Lincoln. He wrote "Abraham Lincoln as a Man Among Men" (1922), "We Have With Us Tonight" (1941), and "Meet Abraham Lincoln" (1946).
