A child prodigy, he debuted at 5. At 8 he was sent on a 10-year Chilean government grant to study in Germany. He was admitted to the Stern Conservatory of Berlin and studied under Martin Krause, himself a pupil of Franz Lizst. At 11 he could play Liszt's "Transcendental Etudes" considered to be one of the most difficult sets of works ever written for the piano, and also Brahms' "Paganini Variations." In 1941 the Arrau family left Germany for the US and adopted dual U.S./Chilean citizenship in 1979. Numerous pianists studied with Arrau, incl. Garrick Ohlsson. The Robert Schumann Society established the Arrau Medal in 1991; it has been awarded to Andras Schiff, Martha Argerich and Murray Perahia, and he was named an honorary member of the Society.
