Description:
(b. 1936) Israeli-English conductor, studied violin at the Israeli Academy of Music. Upon hearing him there, Leonard Bernstein endorsed a scholarship for him to study conducting at the Conservatoire de Paris. At Novara (Italy), he won first prize at the 1963 Guido Cantelli conducting competition. Inbal made most of his early appearances in Italy, but a successful 1965 British debut with the London Philharmonic led to other engagements with British orchestras. He eventually took joint British citizenship. He was principal conductor of the hr-Sinfonieorchester in Frankfurt 1974 and, with them, was the first to record the original versions of several of Bruckner's symphonies, for which he won the Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplatten-Kritik. He also recorded a complete cycle of the symphonies of Mahler and Shostakovich. He was chief conductor at La Fenice in Venice 1984-89 and 2003-11, conducted the complete symphonies of Bruckner at the Rheingau Musik Festival with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, concluding with the unfinished Ninth Symphony. He was principal conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin 2001-06 and was appointed music director of La Fenice in 2007. Inbal became principal conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and remains with them. He led the Czech Philharmonic 2009-12. He is best known for interpretations of late-Romantic works, but is also noted as an opera conductor, and has given premieres of several modern works. 13 1/2 x 4 1/4 (opened) German Christmas card, the front with a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 b&w image of the Aachen (Germany) cathedral with printed German holiday sentiments. On blank right inside is a Christmas 1971 sentiment signed by Inbal: "Happiness and health/for the new year/[signed]. From the collection of M. Scott Mampe, later head of the Classical Division (US) of Philips Records, coordinating activities with Philips' headquarters in the Netherlands and an office in London.
