(1908-1999) Minnesota lawyer, Mayo Clinic resident counsel 1950-59. Nicknamed “Old No. 3”, he was picked to fill Abe Fortas’ seat following contentious battles over 2 previous, failed nominations forwarded by Nixon in 1969–70, G. Harrold Carswell & Clement Haynsworth. Assoc. Justice 1970-94, he authored the Court’s majority opinion in the 1973 controversial abortion decision, Roe v. Wade, for which he was regularly villified. Warren Burger, best man at his wedding, was a long-time friend and both were originally nicknamed the “Minnesota Twins”; Blackmun voted with Burger in 87.5% of closely-divided cases during his first 5 terms (1970-75) and in the final 5 years that Blackmun and Burger served together, he joined Burger in only 32.4% of cases. TLS as Associate Justice on 11 x 8 1/2 ivory engraved Court Chambers letterhead, Washington, June 11 1985, to a New Jersey man. Justice Blackmun appreciates his gracious letter concerning the Rutgers-Newark Law School Commencement. He adds: "I have always felt that commencement addresses are difficult to compile and more difficult to deliver effectively. It, therefore, comforts me that you feel it had some overtones of effectiveness. Thank you for your message of support and confidence."
