(1808-1875) Tennessee US Rep 1843-53, Governor 1853-57, US Senator 1857-62. Military Governor of Tennessee and Brigadier General USA 1862-64. VP March 4ľApril 15, 1865, President 1865-69, narrowly survived impeachment. US Senator 1875. Rare AQS on 8 1/4 x 6 sheet, Nashville, Tennessee, November 27 1855, unattributed quote from a poem by English poet Samuel Rogers: "The good one better made by ill as odors crushed one sweeter still." Signed while Tennessee Governor 3 weeks before the December 18 death of Rogers. SAMUEL ROGERS (1763-1855) One of the most celebrated English poets during his lifetime, his fame long since eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of them and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources of information about London artistic and literary life which he used his wealth as a banker to support.
