(1791-1852) 14th Secretary of the Navy, served July 24, 1843-Feb. 18, 1844. A Massachusetts Democratic Party leader, elected to the state Senate 1826, Collector of the Port of Boston from the late 1820s to 1838. In July 1843, President Tyler selected him as Navy Secretary in a recess appointment. During his brief tenure, he addressed shipbuilding problems, selected senior officers for important seagoing commands, revised supply arrangements in the Navy Yards and attempted to establish a school for Midshipmen. His appointment as Secretary failed to receive Congressional confirmation, requiring him to leave office when his successor (Thomas Gilmer) was confirmed. 6 3/4 x 8 ALS, Washington, August 14 1842, to J. Bingham Esq., Boston, replying to Bingham's letter relative to a Dr. Ticknor. Henshaw says the Doctor's "...wishes will be regarded so far as the usages of the Services will permit." Marked "Private" by Henshaw at top left.
