(1923-2016) Polish-born 9th President of the State of Israel, twice Prime Minister, once Interim PM, member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning 66+ years. Elected to the Knesset in Nov. 1959 and, except for a 3-month hiatus in early 2006, served continuously until 2007, when he became President, retiring 2014. During his career, he represented 5 political parties in the Knesset: Mapai, Rafi, the Alignment, Labor, and Kadima, and has led Alignment and Labor. Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for the peace talks he participated in as Foreign Minister, producing the Oslo Accords. He is the 1st former PM elected President of Israel. In 1932, Peres' father immigrated to Palestine. In 1947, Peres joined the Haganah, and Ben-Gurion made him responsible for personnel and arms purchases. In 1952, he was appointed Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Defense, and in 1953 became Director-General at 29. He was involved in arms purchases and establishing strategic alliances. He was instrumental in establishing close relations with France, securing massive amounts of quality arms that helped tip the balance of power in the region (including the advanced Dassault Mirage III jet fighter). He was instrumental in establishing the Dimona nuclear reactor, and entered into a tri-national agreement with France and the UK, positioning Israel in what would become the 1956 Suez Crisis. In June 2012, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama. He is the author of 11 books. SP, 4 1/2 x 6 color satin finish bust portrait in open collar shirt, signed in English.
