Description:
(1896-1985) Highly decorated 3rd Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. An expert in amphibious warfare, and taught courses at Marine Corps training facilities in the 1930s. He enlisted in the Marines in 1917 and was assigned to the newly created 5th Marine Regiment and sent to France with the AEF. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant 6/9/18 and participated in the battles of Belleau Wood, Chateau-Thierry, the Aisne-Marne Offensive and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He was awarded the Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, 2 Silver Stars and a Purple Heart. He remained in Europe on occupation duty until Sept. 1919, then served in Washington, Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Marine Base Quantico and in May 1923 was sent to Haiti where he helped organize police units. In WW II he was awarded the Legion of Merit while Brigadier General for exceptionally meritorious service in the recapture of Guam while chief of staff of the 3rd Amphibious Group and received a Distinguished Service Medal for operations against the Japanese in the Southern Palau and Ryuku Islands 8/13/44-6/30/45. He retired as a Lieutenant General. TLS as Brigadier General, US Marines, on 10 1/2 x 8 Navy Department, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations letterhead, Washington, June 29 1948, to a Cleveland collector. Gen. Silverthorn sends a photograph, biography and 2 autographs, noting the collector, like himself, is a WW I veteran. With unsigned 2-1/2pp biography.
