(1804-1875) No. Carolina Whig US Senator 1840-43, Governor 1845-49. Secretary of the Navy 1850-52 (Fillmore), 1852 Whig VP candidate with Winfield Scott. No. Carolina CSA Senator 1864-65. In 1866 he was again elected to the US Senate, but because North Carolina had not yet been readmitted to the Union, he did not present his credentials. 3 1/2pp 10 3/4 x 8 very good content ALS, Washington, February 21 1852, while Navy Secretary, to Messrs Wm. H. Bissell, J. H. H. Hewes, Wm. R. Smith, Alexander Evans and Volney E. Howard, thanking them for an invitation to a congressional banquet celebrating Washington's (120th) Birthday. While unable to attend because of his health, Graham sends a salute to Washington and his greatness in cementing the "bonds of our Union", and hopes "...sectional hostility [will be] repulsed, the National power maintained, and our liberties and union coexist in harmony." With typescript. Four months later, Graham was nominated by the Whigs as Winfield Scott's running mate.

Condition: Good, lower left corner tear of no great effect, light toning, few ink smears; difficult handwriting to decipher.
