(1822-1885) Civil War hero, US President 1869-1877, administration marked by corruption. After leaving the White House, Grant and his family toured the world for 2 years, returning Dec. 16, 1879. Sought but lost 1880 Republican presidential nomination. 3 1/4 x 5 3/4 Executive Mansion envelope addressed by Grant to Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, Grant's franking signature at top right, lining thru printed "Secretary". No date, no postal cancellation. With portrait for framing. HAMILTON FISH (1808-1893) NY US Rep (Whig) 1843-45, Governor 1849-50, Senator 1851-57 (Whig, Republican). While Secretary of State 1869-77, he negotiated the 1871 Treaty of Washington that settled the Alabama Claims and also settled the Oregon-Canada boundary with the British.

Condition: Very good, one illegible word in address with 2 light water stains
