(1823-1900) Ohio US Rep. 1855-61, Senator 1861-77 & 1881-97, father of Sherman Silver Purchase and Anti-Trust Acts. Initially a Whig, Sherman was among those anti-slavery activists who formed what became the Republican Party. As a member of the House, Sherman traveled to Kansas in 1856 to investigate unrest between pro- and anti-slavery partisans there. He rose in party leadership and was nearly elected Speaker in 1859. Secretary of the Treasury 1877-81 (Hayes), Secretary of State 1897-98 (McKinley). Frameable 8 x 5 ALS while Ohio US Rep, Washington, January 15 1857, complying with a request for his autograph.
