(1923-2015) Jewish Vienna-born chemist, Stanford University professor of chemistry from 1959, author and playwright best known for his contribution to the development of the oral contraceptive pill (OCP). He synthesized norethisterone, the first orally highly active progestin used in one of the first three oral contraceptive pills. The birth control pill helped lay the foundation for the sexual revolution of the 1960s through the ability of birth control that women acquired through the contraceptive pill. He wrote several novels, including Cantor's Dilemma (1989) in which he explored the ethics of modern scientific research. He received a National Medal of Science in 1973 from President Nixon (while on his “enemies list”), the Priestley Medal (American Chemical Society, 1992), National Medal of Technology (1991), etc., and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (1978). The Djerassi Glacier on Brabant Island in Antarctica is named after him. He mentions a number of colleagues who appear as minor characters in his book and suggests Roald Hoffman (American theoretical chemist, 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate) as a potential reviewer.
