Burbank, Luther

1923 card signed by the pre-eminent horticulturist, developed 800+ strains and varieties of plants

Price: $85.00

Description:
(1849-1926) American horticulturist, at age 21 purchased 17-acre tract near Lunenberg, Mass. and began a 55-year plant breeding career. In 1871 developed the Burbank potato, introduced in Ireland to help combat the blight epidemic. In 1875 he sold the rights to the Burbank potato for $150 to travel to Santa Rosa, California, where he established a nursery garden, greenhouse, and experimental farms that became famous throughout the world. Burbank developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants (inc. Shasta daisy & Fire poppy), including 113 varieties of plums and prunes, 10 varieties of berries, 50 varieties of lilies and the Freestone peach. He worked by effecting multiple crosses of foreign and native strains to obtain seedlings, which he grafted onto fully developed plants for rapid assessment of hybrid characteristics. He carried on plant hybridization and selection on a huge scale, at any one time maintaining as many as 3,000 experiments involving millions of plants - he tested 30,000+ new varieties of plums alone. The 1930 Plant Patent Act permited protection of new and distinct varieties of asexually reproduced plants, other than tuber-propagated plants, the legislation resulting from growing awareness that plant breeders had no financial incentive to enter plant breeding because they could not exercise control over their discoveries. Plant Patent Nos. 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 41, 65, 66, 235, 266, 267, 269, 290, 291, and 1041 were issued to Burbank posthumously. Frameable signed 3 x 5 tan card, adds Santa Rosa, Calif., December 5 1923.
