(1884-1968) Massachusetts US Rep (R) 1925-67. Major opponent of FDR in Congress ("Martin, Barton and Fish"), he was House GOP Leader 1939-59 and House Speaker 1947-49, 1953-55 (the only Republican to serve as Speaker between 1931 and 1995). Martin was the Chariman of the Republican National Committee 1940-42. After dramatic GOP losses in the 1958 elections, which placed a return to majority status out of reach (for 36 more years, until 1994) he was ousted from the leadership by Indiana's Charles A.
