Description:
(1884-1980) Associate Justice 1938-1957, the last person to serve as a Supreme Court Justice without a law degree. He studied law at the University of Virginia and Columbia University but did not obtain a law degree. He was admitted to the Kentuck Bar in 1910. General Counsel of the Federal Farm Board 1929-32 and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation 1932-35, Solicitor General 1935-38. On the bench, Reed was considered a moderate and often held the balance between the Court's liberals and conservatives in split decisions. He generally adhered to a narrow interpretation of the Constitution in the spirit of the New Deal. 3 ¾ x 6 ½ 1964 5c John F. Kennedy Memorial stamp cacheted First Day Cover, postmarked “First Day of Issue”, Boston, Mass., May 29, 1964, signed by Reed after his retirement from the Court.
