(1818-1901) Grandson of Signer of the Declaration of Independence Roger Sherman, cousin of Ebenezer and George Hoar, grandfather of editor Maxwell Perkins, great-grandfather of Archibald Cox. Graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law, admitted to New York Bar 1841. A Whig and then fledgling Republican, he was an assistant US District Attorney 18491853. In 1860 he was chairman of the New York delegation to the Republican Convention and placed William Seward's name in nomination for President. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the US senate in 1860, a member of the 1867-68 New York state constitutional convention. He was chief counsel for President Johnson during his impeachment trial and served as Attorney General July 1868-March 1869, appointed after the Senate declined to re-confirm Henry Stanberry to the office, from which Stanbery had resigned to participate in the defense of Johnson in the impeachment trial. In 1872 he was US counsel before the Alabama Claims arbitration tribunal at Geneva, Switzerland. He was also a founding member of the New York City Bar Association, and its 1st president 1870-79. Evarts served as counsel for President-elect R. B. Hayes, on behalf of the Republican Party, before the Electoral Commission in the disputed 1876 presidential election and was Secretary of State during President Hayes's administration. He was a delegate to the 1881 Paris International Monetary Conference. He was NY US Senator 1885-91, a sponsor of the Judiciary Act of 1891 ("The Evarts Act") which created the US Courts of Appeals. He led the American fund-raising effort for the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, serving as chairman of the American Committee and the noted orator spoke at its unveiling on October 28, 1886. Senator Evarts retired from public life due to ill health in 1891. Frameable signed 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 card.
