Description:
(b. 1942) 47th US VP (2009-present). At 29, he became one of the youngest people ever elected to the US Senate. Weeks after the election, his wife Neilia and their 1-year-old daughter, Naomi, were killed and their 2 young sons critically injured in an auto accident. He was sworn in to the Senate at his sons' hospital bedside and began commuting to Washington daily by train from Delaware, a practice he maintained throughout his Senate career. In 1977, Vice President Biden married Jill Jacobs, a Ph.D. in Education, currently teaching at a Northern Virginia community college. His son, Beau (1969-2015), was Delaware's Attorney General 2007-15 and served in the Delaware National Guard, deployed to Iraq 2008-09; he has another son and a daughter. A Delaware Senator for 36 years, he was Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 17 years, widely recognized for his work on criminal justice issues, including the landmark 1994 Crime Law and the Violence Against Women Act. On July 1, 1991, Judge Clarence Thomas was nominated to fill Justice Thurgood Marshall's seat on the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings, chaired by Senator Biden, were bitter and intensely fought, centering on an accusation that he sexually harassed or engaged in unseemly behavior toward a subordinate, attorney Anita Hill. The Senate ultimately confirmed Thomas 52Ė48. As Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 12 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping foreign policy. As VP, he was tasked with implementing and overseeing the $840B stimulus package in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which helped rebuild our economy and lay the foundation for a sustainable economic future. Biden also leads the Ready to Work Initiative, the Obama Administrationís key effort to identify opportunities to improve workforce skills and training systems to help better prepare workers for 21st century economy jobs. As Vice President he appointed the first-ever White House Advisor on Violence Against Women. He has also been tasked with convening sessions of the Cabinet and leading interagency efforts, particularly to reduce gun violence and raise the living standards of middle class Americans in his role as Chair of the Middle Class Task Force. With decades of foreign policy experience in the Senate, Biden advises President Obama on international issues. While US Senator, Biden led the effort to enlarge NATO to include former Warsaw Pact countries. He also has been leading administration efforts to support a sovereign, democratic Ukraine, he has been deeply involved in shaping policy toward Iraq, championed Israelís security, is the point person for Western Hemisphere diplomacy, and has led the Administrationís regional efforts to address economic, social, governance, and citizen security challenges. 10 x 8 ISP, glossy b&w bust portrait (with his original hair) inscribed with nice sentiment to a couple, signed as US Senator in 1976, during his first Senate term.
