Description:
(1850-1912) USMA 1871, eldest son of U. S. Grant, soldier, diplomat. He attended school in Galena, Ill. until the outbreak of the Civil War. His organized and was Colonel of a volunteer regiment and Frederick accompanied his father when the regiment went to northern Missouri, but was sent home when it arrived. He rejoined his father off and on at several campaigns during the war. After West Point, he was assigned to the 4th US Cavalry and took a leave to work with the Union Pacific Railroad as a civil engineer. Late in 1871, he was ADC to General Sherman in Europe, rejoining the 4th Cavalry in Texas in 1872. In 1873, he was on General Sheridan's staff, promoted to Lieut. Colonel, was on the Yellowstone Expedition and was with Custer in the Black Hills Expedition. In 1877, he took a leave of absence to accompany his father on a trip around the world. In 1878, Grant fought in the Indian Wars. He resigned from the army in 1881 and assisted his father in preparing his memoirs while in business in New York City. In 1889, President Harrison appointed him Minister to Austria-Hungary, allowed to continue in his post After Cleveland was elected; he resigned in 1893. Grant was a NYC police commissioner 1894-98, serving with Theodore Roosevelt. When the Spanish-American War broke out Grant was commissioned Colonel of the 14th New York Vols., promoted to Brig. Genl. Vols. and served in Puerto Rico under General Nelson Miles. In 1899 he was sent to the Philippines where he remained until 1902. In 1901, he was commissioned Brig. Genl., US Army. When he returned home, he held various commands and was promoted to Major Genl. in 1906. At his death, he commanded the Eastern Division which included the Dept. of the East and the Dept. of the Gulf. 2 3/4 x 3 1/2 card signed "F. D. Grant/Brig.
