(1836-1909) CSA Major General, postwar So. Crolina US Senator, Major General Vols. in the Spanish-American War. Elected to the state legislature in 1860, resigned in 1861 when the Civil War began. He served in the cavalry with Hampton's Legion and lost his right foot at Brandy Station, became Brig. Genl. Feb. 1864. Financially ruined after the War, he again served in the state legislature from 1866. He ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1870. In 1877, as Reconstruction ended and Democrats regained control of the state, he was elected by the legislature to the US Senate, serving 1877-95, losing the 1894 primary to "Pitchfork Ben" Tillman. In 1898, he was appointed Major General US Volunteers during the Spanish-American War. He supervised the evacuation of Spanish troops from Cuba and was honorably discharged in 1899. In 1903, he was elected VP of the Southern Historical Society, and in 1904, relocated to Mexico, where he served as president of a mining company. 2 3/4 x 3 1/2 card signed by Butler as Maj.
