Bush, George H. W.

1984 color White House photo signed and inscribed by Vice President Bush to White House Chief Usher Rex Scouten and his wife

Price: $225.00

Description:
(b. 1924) President 1989-1993. Father of President George W. Bush (2001-09). Connecticut-born Houston millionaire oilman, US Rep, United Nations Ambassador, GOP National Committee chairman, Ambassador to China, CIA Director, unsuccessful 1980 GOP presidential aspirant. VP 1981-89 (with Reagan). He is also the last living former President who is a veteran of WW II. Foreign policy drove the Bush presidency: military operations were conducted in Panama and the Persian Gulf; the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, and the USSR dissolved 2 years later. Domestically, Bush reneged on a 1988 campaign promise ("Read my lips, no new taxes!") and, after a struggle with Congress, signed an increase in taxes that Congress had passed. In the wake of a weak recovery from an economic recession, along with continuing budget deficits and the controversy over his appointment of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, he lost the 1992 election to Bill Clinton. His presidential library was dedicated in 1997, and he has been active, often with Clinton, in various humanitarian activities. ISP, 8 x 10 color satin finish "official photograph/The White House/Washington" stamped on back with January 4 1984 date, signed by Vice President Bush, and inscribed by him "to the Scoutens/with holiday greetings & high regard/George Bush." Thanks & Best wishes". Vice President Bush, holding a beverage glass, is shown talking with Mr. & Mrs. Scouten in The White House. REX W. SCOUTEN (1924-2013) Member of the US Secret Service 1947-60, an assistant White House usher 1960-69, White House Chief Usher 1969-86 and White House Curator 1986-97.
