Description:
(1898-1980) SEC Commissioner 1936 & Chairman 1937-39, Associate Justice 1939-1975. Great civil libertarian, authored opinion in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) which established a constitutional right to privacy. Noted outdoorsman, environmentalist and author. DS, Washington, June 4 1958, 3 x 8 1/4 rare bank check likely completed by Justice Douglas, The City Bank of Washington "special account" check #2210, Douglas' name printed at the left side. Douglas pays $140 to wife Mercedes H. Douglas, endorsed twice by her on the verso noting "for deposit". Douglas's 1st wife was Mildred Riddle, whom he married on Aug. 16, 1923. They had 2 children and divorced on July 20, 1953. While still married to Riddle, Douglas began openly pursuing Mercedes Hester Davidson in 1951. Other justices at the time kept mistresses as secretaries, or kept them away from the Court building, according to Douglas's messenger Harry Datcher, but Douglas "did what he did in the open. He didnít give a damn what people thought of him." He divorced Riddle in 1953 and married Davidson on Dec. 14, 1954. In 1961 Douglas pursued Joanie Martin, a college student writing her thesis on him. In the summer of 1963, he divorced Davidson; at age 64, Douglas made 23-year-old Martin his 3rd wife on Aug. 5, 1963. They divorced in 1966, and on July 15, 1966, Douglas married Cathleen Heffernan, a 22-year-old college student; though their age difference at the time of their marriage was a subject of national controversy, they remained together until his death in 1980.
