(1893-1969) American spymaster, OSS Chief in Switzerland 1942-45, CIA Director 1953-61, resigned after Bay of Pigs fiasco. Member of Warren Commission to investigate death of President Kennedy. TLS on 8 3/4 x 6 1/2 official letterhead as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, March 17 1956, to Dr. Walter Langsam, University of Cincinnati. Dulles is pleased to accept Langsam's invitation to speak at the University annual U.C. Day Banquet, noting that "[t]o be 'anchor man' on such an interesting and worthwhile program is an honor indeed." Dulles looks forward to seeing Langsam the evening of April 20. In an initialed postscript, Dulles ask Langsam how long he wants Dulles to speak. WALTER C. LANGSAM (1906-1985) Historian, author, educator. President of the University of Cincinnati 1955-71, steering it to a period of enormous growth. He led Wagner College on Staten Island, NY 1945-52 and was president of Gettysburg College 1952-55. Langsam taught at Columbia University 1927-38 and Union College 1938-45, and was an OSS operative in Austria in August 1945. He wrote 15 books, incl. "The World Since 1914" (1933), an academic best-seller through 8 editions.
