1972 signed photo as UN Ambassador

Price: $225.00

Description:
(b. 1924) President 1989-1993. Father of President George W. Bush (2001-09). Connecticut-born Houston millionaire oilman, Texas US Rep, United Nations Ambassador, GOP National Committee chairman, Ambassador to China, CIA Director, unsuccessful 1980 GOP presidential aspirant. VP 1981-89 (with Reagan). In 1970 Nixon convinced Bush to relinquish his House seat to run for the US Senate against Ralph Yarborough, a fierce Nixon critic. Former Congressman Lloyd Bentsen defeated Yarborough in the Democratic primary and handily defeated Bush. Bush's political career waned, but Nixon noticed and appreciated the sacrifice Bush had made of his Congressional position and appointed him UN Ambassador. He was confirmed unanimously by the Senate, 1971-73. Amidst the Watergate Scandal, Nixon asked Bush to become chairman of the Republican National Committee, which bush accepted and held this position when the popularity of both Nixon and the GOP plummeted. 10 x 8 b&w bust portrait in front of the US Mission to the United Nations, adds year 1972 and "Amb./USUN".
